Leah was born in 1871 at 100 Cowley Rd, Shadwell where her parents had moved a few years previously to be near the docks. Her father was a first class engineer sailing regularly from London to Canada on the "Medway" but was home for her birth and again at the end of March when he registered the birth. By the age of 10, the family had moved to Bromley Hall Rd, Poplar, and her father was now sailing from London to the Cape on Castle Line steamers. When she was about 20, she entered one of the new teacher's training colleges, which she left at the end of 1892 to start teaching at nearby Woolmore St school. Leah continued teaching until she was 60, being appointed head teacher of Janet St school in Milwall in 1916, and then head teacher of a large school for mentally defective children near Old Kent Rd in 1922. In 1896 while still teaching at Woolmore St school, she married Frederick STEVENSON, who lived in a nearby street and was also a teacher at a local boy's school. A son Ronald was born a year later, but in April 1898 she miscarried twins. Roderick was born in 1901 when they were living at Manor Park, but shortly after, they moved to 112 Browning Rd East Ham. In the next road lived Leah's sister Christina, married to Roderick Morrison, a marine engineer. After the war, Leah’s son Ronald became a seaman, and Roderick emigrated to Canada. Ronald was attacked at Marseille, returned home, but died from his injuries in 1926. Roderick lost his right hand in a factory accident in the USA and also returned home. He married in 1933, but his wife did not get on with Leah. Some time after they both retired, Leah and Fred moved to Leigh where Fred died in 1943. For a while Leah tried to live with her son Roderick, but could not get on with her daughter-in-law, and returned to Leigh where she lived with her neice Nellie Ker. She died in 1947 at the age of 76. Jean remembers her as a strong-willed but fun-loving woman, who liked her and took an interest in her reading and writing. She played bridge and smoke Turkish cigarettes. She did not want Jean to call her grandma, instead chose the name "Meezie", probably from the Turkish meze - a little bit of everything; she had black hair and a dark complexion, so she said could pass as jewish or other nationality. |
